Gombe National Park

Welcome to the Home of Chimpanzees — Gombe Stream National Park, located in the western part of Tanzania along the scenic shores of Lake Tanganyika.

This compact yet extraordinary park is world-renowned as the site of Dr. Jane Goodall’s pioneering chimpanzee research, which began in 1960. Today, it remains one of the best destinations in Africa to observe wild chimpanzees up close in their natural forest environment.

Established in 1968, Gombe National Park is Tanzania’s smallest but most intimate national park a tranquil paradise where adventure, history, and nature come together.

Unlike Tanzania’s more popular parks, Gombe offers a serene, uncrowded experience. There are no busy roads or safari convoys just the soothing sounds of nature, the rustling of trees, and the distant calls of chimpanzees.

It’s a perfect destination for travellers seeking peace, privacy, and a deep connection with the wild. Whether you’re looking for a short adventure or a quiet add-on after a classic safari, Gombe is ideal for couples, nature lovers, researchers, or anyone wanting to escape the crowds and discover something special.

Accommodation in Gombe National Park

As Gombe is a remote and less-visited park, accommodation options are limited  which adds to its exclusivity and peaceful charm.

  • Mbali Mbali Gombe Lodge – The only established lodge inside the park, offering comfortable chalets with stunning lake views, private decks, and excellent service. It’s perfect for travelers seeking a bit of luxury in the wilderness.
  • Adventures Tents and Gombe Hostel – These are budget-friendly accommodations managed by TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks Authority), offering simple but comfortable lodging ideal for backpackers and adventure travellers.

Because space is limited and the park receives relatively few visitors, we strongly advise booking early, especially during the dry season (July to October). Akondo Adventures can assist with advance reservations and full travel arrangements to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience.
