Ruaha River Lodge, part of the family-run Foxes Safari Camps, sits on a prime stretch of the Great Ruaha River and holds the distinction of having been the only safari camp in Ruaha National Park for two decades before Tanzania opened to international tourism. This pioneering history secured its exceptional riverside location, far from any other lodges, giving guests the rare feeling of having the park almost entirely to themselves. Spacious bandas (cottages) overlook the riverbed, allowing guests to watch wildlife, including elephants, lions, and a remarkable variety of birdlife, from the comfort of their own verandas.
Ruaha National Park itself is described as Tanzania’s best-kept secret, the country’s second-largest national park at 20,226 km², yet far less crowded than the Serengeti, making it an intimate and exclusive wildlife sanctuary. Activities include game drives, guided walking safaris along the river, bush breakfasts at dawn, and riverside sundowners at the firepit. The park is a global biodiversity hotspot with large populations of lion, elephant, and up to 574 bird species during the wet season when migratory birds arrive. The dry season from around June to October is considered the prime time to visit, as animals gather along the river’s remaining water sources.
